The difference between lost and found ...

2/6/2015

William Nicol, MAF International Aviation Director, recently wrote:

A couple of weeks ago I was involved in some flight training up in PNG.  As we came into land at Hewa, pilot Irwin Hodder mentioned that every single man in that village had killed a man.  I took a deep breath as Irwin was forced to shut down the engine, rather than become airborne again immediately.  Any time on the ground in this place was too long for me!
A day or two later I got to fly PNG government health workers into the nearby village of Yifki where New Tribes Mission missionaries are now based.  The difference between the neighbouring villages was palpable.  The people danced and acted out the simple but life changing message – “We were lost in darkness and now we have found a new way to live”.  These people no longer wanted to live like the surrounding tribes who continue to exist under a cloud of superstition and fear.  To this day the Hewa people come across to attack those living in Yifki, killing their pigs and people in an attempt to ward off their suffering and sickness.

I was struck by the significant difference that the Word of God can have - not changing cultures, but redeeming them.  As we in MAF fly, as we fix aircraft, work with technology,  serve in remote places, care for our kids, work in support offices  … the list goes on and on … we are each a small part of God’s redemptive work in bringing people out of darkness into light.
